I meant to ask this a few weeks ago. When was getting my mounds ready for my pumpkins I saw some quite large worms in the patch, larger than I'm accustomed to seeing. They look like ordinary earthworms except they're about 8 inches long and thicker. Do large worms mean regular worms are eating alot and are happy in the patch, or have I just missed seeing them before?

I'd say they are night crawlers. They can reach lengths of 12 inches. I have a few around here but not too many..

you usually don't see them during the day at all, they stay down deep and only "come out at night". Go water your lawn at midnight with the lights off and then wait about 15 minutes and turn on a light, you will see hundreds of them.

I you have 5% humus or better you can attain a high worm count right in your patch. Feed them coffee grounds. They love it. Coffee grounds are reccommended food by the growers.

Maintain a light mulch or cover crop to encourage them to stay in the top six or eight inches. Only two reasons they leave your patch top six inches are....to hot, to cold and not enough remaining food.

No need to purchase them but you could seed a few from other areas near your patch. One they will come if the soil is right. Two you can seed them to jump start the process. Three....if the soil is not right they won't stay anyway.
I make it fun by paying the little kids nearby to ketch a few for jump starting the breading populations.
