I germinated two 723 Bhaskarans with the intention of crossing with 846 Jutras. (Betcha didn't think I meant THAT 723 or 846!) But, both of my 723s split between the cots right down the stem into my growing medium...(I presume down to the roots) I don't intend on transplanting since it seems like a trait I'd rather not reinforce, if they're even viable at all. Anybody ever had this problem? Frank

Do you mean compleately split in two or split open? I've had one split open for me before. I had no backup so kept it and grew a PB for me at the time. It scabbed over and was never a problem. I made sure not to bury the stump so it would not become one. If you mean cleaved in half like someone took a knife to it that would be a new one for me.

Frank, I had that problem last year. Here are two links, the first is from 23 May http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=8795

Oh well, I thought I had posted a picture in August but I did not. At any rate that plant grew just fine, very healthy. It produce a 638 pound pumpkin in only 250 sq ft. The split remained wide open, but it scabbed over and was not a problem at all.

I forgot to mention, as far as not reinforcing the split trait, I have germinated a half dozen or so of the seeds from that pumpkin and none of them split open. Others are growing it as well and no one has reported that it split. I do not think it is a trait that is passed on.

To clarify, the plant is split down the middle, as if someone took a knife and sliced down between the cots and through the stem. One cot is hanging to the left, and the other to the right. The first true leaf is on one side, which is now more vigorous than the other side. Maybe the other side will just die off since it doesn't appear to have any potential for vine growth...
