I was just wondering if anyone knew if deer were interested in pumpkins. In my part of Nj we have herds of them (one group frequents my back yard) and was wondering if i plant farther from the house next year, will the plant and or the pumpkin be eaten?
Thanks, Divyan

They love them. they move through the patch kicking and taking single bites out of the fruits...like a bite from each...then move on ruining alot of pumpkins. If they just ate one all the way it wouldn't be so bad...but they just nibble and kick bunches.....a major problem here on Long Island where environmentalists and tree huggers outnumber farmers and sensible people. These are the same people who buy the 400,000 dollar condos next to a centuries old farm then complain about the farm 'til the farmers give up and sell the land for developement to have tree huggers complain about the developement of nature.. Deer like pumpkins....alot.

I had Ivory soap hanging up around the patch, and the deer were biting the soap & leaving the pumpkins alone. I later installed an electric fence to keep groundhogs away; after that the soap did not get any more bites. So far, the deer have not jumped the 3' fence. --Bruiser

Human hair is excellent for repelling deer. I kept my 22 inch ponytail (cut off last year) hanging in the center of my garden. Every now and then I would wipe sweat on it. All my neighbors had problems with deer but not one came near my patch. Go to beauty salons and such and I'm sure they will let you sweep it up. stuff it in an old nylon or something and keep it off the ground.

I guess u can calm me lucky i never have had any problems with any animals..... And i know that there are all kinds of critters running around my house....We have a pet deer, and all kinds of tame rabbits that we turned out but the rabbits just lay in under the pumpkin leaves and eat the weeds that grow. It seems really odd to me, but i think they don't eat the plants because i keep them soaked in Isotox. No animal problems my plants seem to up and die with out there help:) Justin
