I was out weeding! LOL

The Stirrup Hoe is what I was using. The one on the left in the following jpeg.

http://bse.wisc.edu/HFHP/press_info/diamondhoe/hoe_three.jpg

But the other tow are also important to have around.

Roundup is fine so long as we stay *FAR* away from the plants, work in *ZERO* wind, & select a large spray nozzle & low pressure to minimize drift.

For the Organic crowd, Scythe Herbicide is a fatty acid potassium salt (not a fertilizer) that will burn down weeds very quickly. As fast as minutes with the sun shining.

Propane burners are handy too. Dangerous sometimes. But effective. These things are amusing to me. In an effort to save the earth from herbicides, we instead burn non-renewable potroleum gases & polute the atmosphere instead. LOL

Use the stirrup hoe Brooks. They work well & aren't very expensive.

vinegar

I might add(before anyone else does...)This will work IF applied to the weeds when they first emerge. store-bought vinegar, which contains only 5 percent vinegar or acetic acid, isn't strong enough to deal with persistent problem weeds. However, you can now buy vinegar that is especially developed for use as an herbicide, and it contains 20 percent acetic acid, four times stronger than the kitchen variety. Garden vinegar does a much better job of eliminating tough, nasty weeds.Vinegar IS non-selective and as with ANY herbicide, take the precaution of spraying when there is no wind, AND vinegar will affect your soils PH, so use it as a SPOT treatment

hot water will work as good a anything, you just have to be careful, our water heater's element went bad so i hooked the hose up to it and let it run out in the yard and guess what..yep it killed half the yard..

also,, so its ok to spray the round-up in my garden as long as im a good distance away from my plant right?, will the round up stay in my garden for a long period of time? I kinda worrie about once my main vien grows to the spot I sprayed it might hurt my plant.

Vinegar and stirrup hoe works good. If its windy this is what I have done. I took a large styrofoam cup and punched a hole in the bottom. I put the cup over the weeds (rim down) and sprayed vinegar through the hole I punched. I just use a household spray bottle. Bumpy is right, the kitchen stuff doesn't work very well... get the garden stuff.

This is a lot of work if you have a large garden. To keep the work reined in, try Southern's solution and get a propane torch. I am about ready to jump to this method.

Absolutely no 2,4-D near the pumpkins. Especially Ester formulations. These are the ones that volatilize in warm weather. The gas Amines don't gas-off like Esters, but they still shouldn't be used in the patch.

We used to sell an attachment like Toby mentioned. It could probably be made from a plastic bowl I suppose. They were very effective even if a bit cumbersome.

Be very careful with that 20% Vinegar stuff. Many are actually illegal since they are rarely registered with the EPA. Just as soon as EPA finds a company promoting Vinegar as herbicide without registration they shut them down. Not that it doesn't work. It does. But 20% Acetic Acid can burn eyes & lungs. So great care must be exhibitted any time it's place in a compressed air sprayer. The legal versions usually display a DANGER label due to their caustic nature.

Ahhh,me torch..mine works quick also but lugging that dadburn propane tank around kills my back... i feel more wore out after a good burning session than i do after hoeing...and for some strange reason my left arm is always a little bit longer then my right after the burning..

Talking about weeds, check out William Warnock's diary. It looks like they can use some torches or hoes in heaven. But I guess you find those in the other place.
