I swear that I can control weather in western NY with my greenhouses. If a warm sunny day is forecast, I open up the houses and it seems we get cold, cloudy weather, maybe a little hail. Cold and wet forecast, close those babies up and we get brilliant sunshine. I've made many trips home (right at the speed limit)over the lunch hour to fine tune things. I go back to work having the look I've gone the distance with a piece of plastic, but somehow, it's all worth it..

LOL. I'm with you there Joe. Somehow or another I will automate the ventilation of the cloches next year. So far this year I've been lucky. But at any time.....
Somebody posted a slick little automatic opener that was actuated by heat a while back. About $50 I think it was. I see a hinged panel for next year with this little arm swinging it open as the temps rise but a hail cover directly overhead that remains in place.
Here it is.

same here joe. with out 2 misting heads in each greenhouse i would have already fried my plants. with all vents open and the door to the greenhouse open i was still getting temps on my high low thermometer at 104. after misting them for 5 minutes at 11, 1, 3 and 5 i found my highest inside temp at 97 when it was 86 outside. but compared to my friends plants that are in the same yard but without hoophouses, my plants are growing faster probably due the warmer soil. i am hoping to get a massive root system established prior to removing the greenhouses. it may be a battle, but i am seeing first hand results in the yard at that benefits of hoophouses.

www.leevalley.com....Gas charged auto vents as Steve posted above. I have them in use now for a month. The warmer it gets in the hoop house the more they open. They open the vent proportional to the temperature. They aren't rocket sience but sure are a time saver and a plant saver.

I thought I was the only one that left work to uncover plant's, I sure do spend a lot in gas this year.

Wayne, I'm so bad..A couple years ago, I had my wife closing up the greenhouses during a sudden thunderstorm. I was at work, she was home, seemed to make sense at the time. The lighting got so bad, she finally gave up and ran to the house for safety. Unfortunately, the one greenhouse she didn't get closed up had the 846 Calai in it:-(

Last year, I drove home at lunch one day to uncover (I had to convince my 3rd hour teacher to let me leave early so I could drive all the way home and make it back in time for 4th hour). I will admit that I didn't go the speed limit. This year I haven't done much of that since I'm at college. Now I just frantically email my parents and ask them to open/close for me when the weather isn't cooperating. I know my mom already drove home on her lunch break one day last week to open up the hoophouses for me. In a week I'll be done with school and will be home to take care of them myself. :-)

I now error on the "conservative" side when it comes to keeping the doors open on my hoop houses. Too often, I have rushed home to find the temperature inside at 115° or more ......plants looking all limp. Sprayed them with cold water and they recovered in three hours or so. Haven't killed any yet, but sure does scare the "pee" out of a guy!

Same overheating just happened to my habenero peppers... The pots are now in the shade and full of water. I sure hope they recover! Best regards to all from Germany. We expect 23 degrees Celcius and sun today. ....and by the way Joe, your plants are looking good and are protected in the patch since last week. Michel

i have the ability to control winter weather, if my snowplow is on the truck and working fine, all snowstorms miss us or only drop small amounts, when the plow is broken the snow just keeps coming.

LI pumpkin, lol, that is what my friend keeps saying too that i took all the good plants. but with an all eaton line up that i gave him of the 741, 1132, and the 930...he doesn't have much of a leg to stand on on that argument. hope everyone keeps doing what ever it takes to battle this warm spring that has already produced some doozies of thunderstorms around here.
