help, this is my first year! i've had a transplant out in cloche for about 2 weeks, now with about 8 leaves. I go out tonite to see a split in the stem from the ground to the cots(4 inches long, quarter inch wide). a strong wind did blow the cloche open several days ago. did the wind blow it back and forth and do this? Any help? amazingly enough, the plant looks good, except for the stem obviously, can i save it ? what can be done? thanks,Jon

Jon, sometimes stems split like that. more than likely it will survive. at the end of the year you're gonna have a huge stump that's split open.

You could still produce a great pumpkin as I had one on the 713 Kurkowski last year that was growing on about 20 percent of it's stem. Try to keep the cloche closed and I wouldn't mound up any soil over that split or you could have problems later.
