Volume 2 would be my recommendation if only one book fits in the budget. Both 1 & 2 are fine for first year growers. Don't start with the third. It starts off assuming 1 & 2 have been worn thin already.

Here is my personal opinion:
Book one has some good info in it but many parts are just out-dated.
Book two is my personal favourite concerning info on general growing techniques. It covers almost everything you have to know.
Book three is only for the advanced grower. I'd only recommend it if you have already thoroughly read book one and two or at least book two.
Book three goes into great detail and might just overwhelm the beginner. Also, not everything mentioned is really necessary.
But there are the best pictures in it, though.

I'm with Gordon... GO UTES!

Thanks, I have some pics in book III ;-).

But seriously, they are all good. If I were doing them
in an order, I'd go book II, followed closely by book III.
Once you have those, you'll enjoy them so much you'll want
to get book one to get a perspective on the history and
complete your set.

One of the videos is by Joel Holland. At this moment his link is on BP.com's home page. Go there and then book mark his site.

in which case i MUST recommend the Volume 2 Langevin book,
and the '97 Holland video for a starter one there as well.
lotta good germination, pollination and season-long growth and vine burying and.....EVERYTHING! don't worry about getting the most-recent video and starting there, unless you do the package deal from Joel, which i believe is about half-price on the ones PRIOR to the latest one made.
example: get the 2003 video, plus the '97 video at about half price. and you can get some great seeds free with the order, 's'far as i know!
