I woke up this early this morning with a possible answer to someone's weeks old question... how do you heat your hoop house at night without electricity?

would a couple of larger slow buring candles inside each house work ? I think so ... of course one one would have to be extra careful and make sure that there wasn't anything close by that could catch on fire.

I have a friend who uses a Coleman Lantern. Those with small structures might consider Kerosine Lanterns.

A lot of people use candles.

Each Candle wick puts out 100-300 BTU of heat. Not much, but not bad either. I used 6 wicks the other night to keep my greenhouse at about 40 when we got down to 28.

Burning candles or lanterns will help raise the co2 level too!

Cool, I never though about the Co2 level. Something else to spend money on. Great! Cash poor until, Port Elgin.

But keep in mind that you will most likely use the candles at night and as far as I understand it increased levels of co2 are only favourable during daytime when the plant is in the photosynthesis (6 co2 + 6 h2o --> c6h12o6 + 6 o2) cycle. At night, however, a plant will practice respiration (c6h12o6 + 6 o2 --> 6 co2 + 6 h2o) just like humans.
I don't know how harmful increased levels of co2 are but I just wanted to mention it.....

Martin's got it with the nightly use of CO2. I still wouldn't worry about it. Frost killed plants are worse off than those treated to some nightly CO2.

Carbon monoxide emissions might be a greater concern, but still not enough of an issue to lose sleep over unless the number of burning flames is absurdly high.

Not to mention that the neighbors will think you are constructing a shrine to the "Great Pumpkin God".

Ok, I'll be the one to ask ( hehehe), could we take it to the next level with aroma therapy. You know, pumpkin scented candles to set the scene.
All joking aside it does seem like a good idea of using candles to heat the hoop houses....
