Hi all! A newbie here, my first year! My patch is plowed up real nice and deep. [rented an 8hp Troy-Bilt] I added lots of compost and some lime last fall, but here's my situation. I'm using the Dill packet seeds. I bought them at the Topsfield Fair, thinking I was getting some real championship seeds. But then I saw the same packets for sale at local garden center's the checkout counter, for less money even and I was dismayed. My question is: Are the Dill seeds good enough? Dave S. Concord, MA

Last year I grew some of the atlantic giant packet seeds...

I got 4 pumpkins from 3 plants, 130lbs was the largest. It was my first year and I had problems with some excess moisture from such a wet year last year.

One thing I noticed between the seeds I got from that packet and the seeds I got from my pumpkins and from the seeds I got in the mail over the winter from bigpumpkins.com and seedoutlet.com was size. The packet seeds were significantly smaller in size.

But as I said it was my first year and I have nothing to compare it to. But I guess you could put it this way...

A first year grower, growing in mostly decomposing leaves and grass in a very wet area grew a 130lb pumpkin. So in a way I guess you could say they are good. as I couldn't lift the pumpkin on my own it was just too awkward a weight. So if I can't lift it I stand defeated and say the seed was pretty good. We'll see how I do this year with my new seeds.

go to seedoutlet.com, I'm sure they can get some to you right quick... maybe not too late.

I grew a 213 lb pumpkin and 4 over 100 lbs planting in untilled clay with no soil amendments using Dill seeds. I'm sure they would have gone much bigger if I had better soil and better knowledge.

DNA - the size of an AG seed doesn't determine the quality of the seed. sure, you might get slightly bigger cotyledons, but 5 months later, the size of the pumpkin won't depend on the size of the seed it came from.

The small seeds still produced very big cotyledons.
Definitly agree. :)

Generic Atlantic giant seed grew me a 90 lber.
Dill's seed from 400 - 600 lbers grew me a 410 lber.
Dill's premium seed grew me a 600 lber.
Don't sell yourself short, it's worth the effort to find seed that has potential.

big things from little seeds...big seeds are tougher to germinate if you ask me...and I couldn't tell the difference last year come july which plant came from the largest seed ....

Thanks Southern for the offer of seeds and all for the feedback. A neighbor here in MA has offered to share some pedigree seed with me. Nice! Now I am even more excited and really looking forward to this growing season!

Surely I'll make boo koo mistakes my first year. I've been reading all the books, trying to absorb all the proper ways of doing things but....THERE IS SO MUCH TO LEARN!!!!
Fun! I love the challenge.
