Regardless to the quality of your soil this will be a significant limiting factor.
I grew a plant in *mostly* shade last year. (won't bother to do it again) Depending on your skills I bet you could still get a 500 lb fruit from this location.

Well when you live in a climate that is a dry, high altitude desert with 3yrs. of water restrictions in a row then a bit of shade may help, as I am trying an experiment with it this year, when the 90 degree+ days still ahead of us are creaping up.......only more sun and water is the best solution, but you have to play the cards you recieve nature wise and remedy the problem........Better quit talking as the water police are forever watching these days, But they may have to deal with the Pumpkin Police when it is all over with.....
