There are a lot of growers diaries in BP.COM; some of theme are very funny, others are very interesting in the aim to help new growers to fix a technique; in any case their efforts are also direct to promote our hobby and enlarge giant pumpkins community. Why don’t promote a “competition” for the best diary published in BP.COM? I think that there are not necessary prizes, just a “friendly competition” for fun. What’s your opinion?

Best diary could be determined by a vote by BP members and after a KEN given date so as to insure all diaries are season complete.

I'm with Gordon... GO UTES!

While my diary is not on BP.com, I'd like to invite you
all to see it at:

http://idahopumpkin.tripod.com/

I'm not sure if this is "kosher" with the BP.com owners,
for me to mention another site here. So if it's not, then
I promise it will not happen again!

So come see my site, then go back to bigpumpkins.com.

Regards, Cliff

It is a good idea to make the site even more interesting. As Chip proposed, growers could vote for 3 or 5 best diaries at the end of the season (+ the last season in the south hemisphere). Every diary could then have a sum of votes-points displayed next to the name. This way newcomers and by passers could quickly find the most attractive diaries. Jernej

Playing for fun and the occasional "atta boy" some one publically or privately tosses my way is enough food, for this player.

I would not compete because I have seen the price of competion in many other areas, to play, to the rules, which would have, to be establshed.

It is nice to have an open paper so to speak. Anyone within the rules existing can post most anything going any direction with or without a picture. With a good or horrible picture. Presently the diaries are a great opportunty for a posting individual to observe others and try to improve any angle one wishes to show or promote.

Instead of competition I suggest an "atta boy" team. Maybe the team could be enabled with a great electronic certificate of recognition which could be printed out and framed if the receiving person likes to hang awards and recognitions. Maybe by chance or happenstance someone will do and show just one exceptional thing that is not found in the middle of one's work who has the skill to publish it.

There should be a way to alert or submit to the team when someone thinks they have done something good. This way, to site an example, the team could recoginize a simple learning move from a bad photo skill to one of great clarity with nice presentation.

On the other hand if you establish some rules or guidelines you will end up with all of your best diaries looking pretty much the same. That promotes boredom and it may be counter productive.

You all keep tossing this around....but look for a couple dozen different opinions or hold off decision until significant discussion is showing.

Ken and I have been kicking around something like this for a while.

Here is what I suggest.... At the end of the season, people choose the best BigPumpkins.com diary by way of a vote. The top 3 diaries will get some sort of recognition on the site by way of an icon or prominent placing or such.

For the grand prize, the winner will be featured on BPTV DVD.... This concept will become obvious when you see what we did with Ken's 2002 diary on the first DVD.

Comments?

Because there are many excellent diaries and it is difficult to pick only one I suggest that every voter ranks top 5 diaries.

Sounds like a great idea!

I like the idea as a way to sort through the many, many sites. I'll never have time to read them all, ever! But I would love to have an idea of the top (for instance)"Soil Prep" site, and the "fertilization program" and the "pumpkin care" and the "irrigation plan" and the "pest resistance" site - stuff like that.
