As my luck would have it I went out to till the garden and pulled the cord and it broke. The 6.0 (briggs and Stratton I believe)HP engine has the cord cover attached with Rivits. Sears repair facility for homeowners and doityourselfers is closed on Sunday (boy...isn't that great marketing) and the cashier monkeys dont know a rivit from a frog call(ribit). I Imagine I need to do something really dumb to fix this ---(drill out rivits and replace with screws/bolts), but I'd feel more comfortable in knowing this is what I have to do. It confounds me that a repair as regular and expected as a cord replacement warrants drilling rivits....are they THAT dumb?..any help advice short of "buy a Troybuilt" is appreciated...especially if its helpful......and prompt...G

That's why mine doesn't have a recoil starter. Pick up the phone.

Most of the B&S engines I've worked on have had the riveted design like the one you're describing, but to get to the starter to fix the rope you need to pull the entire shroud off. Depending on your engine, there should be 4-5 bolts holding it to the block itself. 2-3 in the head and a couple around the perimeter of the shroud. Just remove the bolts and pull the whole thing off. You'll be able to access the pull start mechanism from behind the shroud it's riveted to.
Don't drill the rivets out. You'll have that mess of a spring to deal with and they're a pain to get back together.
I hope that makes sense.

I forgot to mention that the newer overhead valve engines are a bit more complicated to get apart but they work the same way.
