I am in my yearly panic waiting for emergence. Would everyone tell me what you think your average time from planting (indoors, filed, etc)to breakthrough. Thanks, maybe I'll feel better, maybe I won't

I am doing my annual "pratice" seeds right now and I'll let you know what happens, but usually 3 or 4 days and I've got germination.

i'm pretty happy about it if anything i plant is showing a root forming (seen through the bottom of a clear plastic cup) in 72 hours, or in a 4" peat pot i am happy to see soil disturbance in 72-96 hours....so, breakthrough for me is good at 72-96 hours or shortly thereafter. after that, i start to worry. PS--i like to have a SOIL, at-seed temperature of 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit. 'pal2

The fastest here has been 72 hours out of the starting mix. More often 96 - 120 hours at 85-88*F. Older stubborn seeds may take a week in some cases.

If your really in a hury you can sand the sides of the seed untill you get almost to the inside. Then jently prey the seed apart. Remove the inside and place it point down in seed starting mix.Keep the temp at 90 unless you provide bottom heat then 85 will do. you can almost watch them grow!

After 2.5 days, 3 of the 5 test seeds had 1 inch roots on them. The other two were just starting to open. Also, of the 8 sunflower seeds I was trying, 5 had opened and had roots at this time. Looks like I'm good to go on the 26th.

I have been doing experiments as of late because I was having a difficult time... My good friend Kenny Blair showed me how to do it when he was in town. File the seed or seeds and then soak for 8 hours in water. Then place them in a wet towel paper baggie and place that on top of your hot water heater. The next day, sometime throughout it, it should be sprouted, if not, it is ok! it may take several days. After the radicle (little white tip emerging from the pointed end) is about 1/8 or 1/4 of an inch, take the seed and place it point down in your soil mix. After that the seedling is sure to come up from what I have seen.... 45 for 45 using this method. Thanks, Steve

Describe for me how much you file. Thanks. Greg

I file the edges about as much as I can.. and then using my thumbnail I slit the area that had been filed just a bit so water can enter the seed even easier.

Enough to do good....Not putting in harm at all!

I followed Doc Gipes method for using an old cooler as a germination box. Instead of putting it on a heating pad, I placed it on my high speed cable modem box. It kept the temp at a consistent 80 degrees. My very first seed ever sprouted in 3 days. I will definitely be using this method from now on. Tony I.

Clap, Clap, Clap for the Tony I. guy!!!! Way to go. Now you can relax and do it exactly when you want it for the patch. Good luck on the grow.
