I would like to know the date the rest of you plan to start your seeds,if you havent already. I'm getting ready to but I think I'll wate one more week or so.I have some backups growing right now just for somthing to do.It seems to me that 4" peat pots are to small, two of my seedlings already have roots coming out the bottom and they havent even grown thier first true leave yet.last year for each of my seedlings I cut up 4 4" peat pots and stapled them together in the right way to end up with some nice big peat pots.I'm not shure if I'll do that this year but it did work really well.

I agree, 4 inch peat pots are too small. I start mine in 1 gallon clear plastic water jugs. Pre cut them, tape together. Easy to transplant. I have a tap root on the bottom the same day the seed pops out of the soil. I transplant in 2 or 3 days because the pot gets so root bound. Btw, I started my seeds last week, but I'm in warm sunny san diego. Jim

I'll have to check the Almanac LOL !! I don't know where I found the idea but I start mine in large coffee cans, cut out the bottom and put the seal on the bottom. When it's time to plant I just remove the seal and they slide right out. I'm thinking about using some 5 gallon pails and cutting off the bottoms. Pails are around $5 with lids at Farm and Fleet. That way they'll be bigger hopefully stronger at transplant and I won't be such a nervous mother.

If you want to plant with the sign...this year's stongest natural forces support you most on April 27th. Unless the weather takes a turn for the warmer side of things that will be early enough and maybe to early for some of us.
So I will go with the sign for sure this year. Why not?......unless a solid study warm spell appears and seems to want to hang in for awhile. The Canadian Cold Front will really ultimately suggest the sign day before or after.

i had a few delays last year, trying to start the seeds on the 25th of April. my intent is to start them a LITTLE earlier this year, as i have never had a pollination date earlier than July 9th or 10th. so i guess that since May 1st is on a Saturday, a good time to work on them as they come up and say hello, i will start them on.... Dang! April 25th....creature of habit. planting out like May 1st...now i'm not sure, after hearing everybody else saying later that this...i should KNOW by now!--- 'pal2

april 27th sounds good to me. After hearing that so many of you start your seeds in larger containers I think I'll scrap the 4" peat pots and go with big peat pots or taped together pots. thanks!
