Hi Everyone,
We were wondering if you guys think we need an actual pumpkin lifting tarp. We have two pumpkins. One is estimated at 434 lbs. and the other is estimated 400 lbs. We want to take one to a local weigh off in Durham, CT on 9/26 and possibly the one to Topsfield weigh off on 9/29. We know we don't have a chance, but would love to have them in just to be a part. We don't want to have any lifters get hurt or have our pumpkins fall, but don't really have the funds to buy a special tarp. Do you think a regular plastic poly tarp will hold up the weight? Thanks - RVSK

I've used painters cloth dropcloths on pumpkins heavier than that & it has held up well....Paul

Double up a 6 mil poly tarp by folding it in half and you should be ok.Just make sure you have enough good grippers (people) to handle it. Problem with the plain tarps is they really only have the corners to hold onto--no extra holes to pull on. Seen it work fine for those sizes and bigger......G

I lefted my 552# with a cheap poly tarp. It was hard to get a good hold on anything but the corners, but I only had 4 lifters. I think with more lifters it would work OK. The tarp held up just fine. I think 400 lbs is the limit that I would try with a regular tarp, for fear of dropping it. --Bruiser

I ordered a cargo net from a army-navy surplus on the net. We moved a 300# pumpkin. Just my husband and I moved it with the help of the tractor.

RVSK,
I have also made lifting tarps out of carpet, it's an amazingly strong material! I used electrical conduit to stiffen up the lifting edges, (cut in a few hand holes in the carpet by the edges, and roll up around the conduit or pipe) Then bind the conduit and carpet with duct tape. Got any old carpet around?
