Somebody commented below on a post of mine regarding the root system of pumpkins so I thought I would repost a link to the scientific study again. This is an old study that attempts to determine where the roots actually are on pumpkin plants.
It is interesting and made me rethink where I place my plants in the patch, where I water, where and how I weed my garden, etc.. I now try to imagine the plant in terms of where the roots are and act accordingly.

That is funny I was looking through some of my old saved docs and found this exact article about 20 minutes ago....
Found it - "A mature root system fills the soil to a distance of 15 feet on all sides of the plant".
& growth at 2.5 inches / day.
