Hi, im also growing bix max this year, it is also my first time! I just cut my first one off today. It was polinated the first week of july, and haden't grown in more than a week. I also have one polinated @ Aug 13th, and it is much bigger than the first, not so impressive one. I havent gotten into the measuring thing yet, mostly because Im not quight sure how you guys do it. All I know is that the first one is a little more than 60" around. Good luck with your big Max! Mike

Hey Karen.......sounds like you're gaining on me! My BM-1 is at 127" ott now, and not growing very fast at all. I have a new one that was pollinated last weekend on the 896 Wells that's doubling in size everyday right now. I'll keep watering, and see what happens. My BM-1 was pollinated with males from the 896 Wells........i want those seeds to try for next year, no matter how big it gets! Good luck..........Cuzbiker

Cuzbiker, Your big max are going to be bigger than mine anyway, because you pollinated with males from an AG. I finally know why everyone feeds fish emulsion, I had run out of Miracle Gro, and picked up fish emulsion at the garden store. I don't know if that was the cause for the growth jump or not. The miracle gro was causing lots of new growth on the vines, I pruned back a lot of that growth last weekend and actually trimmed down to just the two vines that the last two pumpkins are on, so that may have put more nutrients to the fruit it's self. The pumpkin you just pollinated last weekend is that AG xAG or half Big Mav?
Walcott pumpkin, Where at in Iowa? DO you have the same luck as C.C. and have Loess Hills soil? Good luck with your as well..Karen

Karen....the new one on the 896 Wells was pollinated by the bees.....i'm assuming. It was set, and growing when we got back from 6 Flags in Ohio last weekend. I'm assuming also that they pollinated it with pollin from the 896 males that were available, but dont know for sure. That BM-1 wont really show the results of the 896 genetics until next year's seeds are planted.....that's why i'm looking forward to seeing what i get to grow next year with the seeds from that pumpkin. The growth on the BM-1 has slowed way down, so if yours is still growing, you could pass me up! Good luck...........Cuz

My big max that was pollinated on the 19th was also done by the bees while we were out camping with the boy scouts (I will always remember that weekend as taking shelter from the tornado that was just over the hill). The bees do a much better juob at pollinating than I do, because Lemon Drop is perfect shape...Karen

How many males were you using when you hand pollinated? I was using 3 to 4 males for every female....may be overkill, but i had plenty of males to go around on the 896 Wells.

The day I pollinated Sunshine, I used one for each of the two females open that day because that was all I had available that day. I also took a piece of the male flower and stuck it inside the female flower.
