“No. In the best environment, the plant will grow a big pumpkin, but in other place or year, and always to get the huge monster, you have to be one with the plant and the fruit.
"What do you mean???
"You have to watch carefully the plant, the leaves, the vines, the stumps, the blossoms, the stems, the fruit, both ends, over, under, in the morning, at noon, in the evening, every day. You can not stand out of the patch a single day; you have to forget your friends, but the other growers, your wife or husband, your family, your friends, your job, your holidays, the rest of your life. You should sleep by night and the "siesta" in the patch. You have to detect the first symptom of nutrient lack or disease, even before the plant does. You have to know what the plant needs at every moment; when to add N, or K or Ca or seaweed or fungicide or beer. In just a phrase: you have to be one with the plant, so you will be able to listen to her.

Carlos new growers may laugh at this...But they are the ones that haven't awoken in a cold sweat. Because they have dreamed about a hail storm, or squash vine borers(by the way the ones in your dreams are huge). They have not dreamed of the bottom falling out of you biggest pumpkin when the lifting team picks it up. Just remember to sleep soundly now. Because come mid-september the dreams will come. My dream lately is that we still have a foot and a half of snow on Mothers Day. also that the ground is still frozen down to 4 feet. Shannon

In the philosophy of ZEN the word "it" has no meaning within our language. A great teacher would say something like this "Man, object,spirit, mind, environment become one and it happens".

I think I see this in the above message. Our philosophy or religious commandment "thow shall not kill" is just begining to be fully understood. What happens after you kill anything is just beginning to be understood. Someday it may apply to all living things. Someday all who read this paragraph may understand it too.

A plant and all that enables it and you to live and thrive are living elements. Our dirt doctors and our real doctors have never created any healing or long term thriving with pills that have not come from living matter. Sometimes we see or experience a false show of attempted improvement but never any fully recovering health that is not supported by living elements or elements that came from living materials.

I have living friends, plants, and soils in my life that I can not help because they are legal addicts being killed by their prescribed medicines that are doing no long term good.
I can help myself so that others may see and understand. Some others may be to sick to understand. Some may not give a hoot from a basis of moral degradation or profit structure dependance. Some may see only part of a truth. It is from them we will no doubt discover greater truths. It is is they who may hurt enough in life or from plant management techniques to really want to learn more and discover better ways to support life.

My dream while working on the road for a few days last week was that mice got into my triple stainless steel, titanium covered,teflon lined,concrete enclosed seed box and ate my seeds. woke up in a sweat and more than a few hundred miles from home. when work ended I raced home ran in the basement to check the stash. [plastic folger coffee cans] i proceeded that evening to order a triple stainless, titanium covered....LOL did i mention the lead casing peter

I fess up....... "I am a roads scholar". Willie and I have learned many a lesson there. When ask how far it is from Williamsport to Niagara the correct answer is "4 1/2 tapes".
A losers answer might be half a case. Miles mean nothing if you really want what is at the end of the trip.
