OK. So you're supposed to count backwards from your weigh-off date 135 days, Right? And that's the day you start your seeds?... or is it the day you plant your seedlings?
This question is killing me because its 7pm, black outside, and my windows are open trying to cool down the place (63* outside, 73* inside). I REALLY want to plant NOW.

In NJ, it always seems that we have a bit of a teaser period of beautiful weather, and then slammed with a short cold spell. Last year we escaped the cold spell for one reason alone, water and lots of it, all year long... never thought i'd complain about too much rain especially after the like 5 years of droughtlike weather...Uga Chaka Uga Chaka - Mr rain god please give us a fertile year - Uga Chaka Uga Chaka I'm planting mine in stages...

Just checked and found rain in the 10 day forecast for the first time in about 3 weeks. While the rain is here, overnight lows will return to the mid 40* range. Still feels like spring to me... my windows are still open and its almost 9pm Pacific.
Snowboarding sucks right now too, cuz its all slush. Groan. Can't plant seeds, can't snowboard, Fruit trees are almost ready to show fruit, gripe-gripe-gripe...

As far as I checked the best planting days this year are April 29-30. How I know it? ... Secret, but I will

Carlos, Isn't that when we have a new moon? If so, I have heard it is best to plant at the beginning of a new moon. owen

I've got an early weigh off which means cutting a pumpkin on 1st. September so might try one in early April. Thats not far off now.

Carlos, Owen, I also have a moon calendar and it also shows April 29&30 as being ideal for sowing fruit producing crops. I originally planned to start my seeds on May 1st but well, it almost makes no difference and perhaps it might really help... Who knows... Martin

Well, I did my first tilling on Suday since the Canadian geese that flew in were mowing down my winter rye. I sent another soil test for final adjustments. Two out of the my three holes are dug and backfilled. And yes its still winter. I hope to enjoy the spring and get most of my work done now. Next, lawn and cleaning windows. Dave

Well doing the math the first seed is filled and already in the the peat pot, the first weighoff is the secound week of aug the Indy fair, so its time if I want to pollinate the secound week of may. There are some problems the ground is froze and there is an inch or so of snow on the ground well things could be worse. The highest temp in the last two weeks has been in the low 40's but everything can be controlled its just how bad do you want it.best of luck to everyone this year mark.

May 1st the seeds get filled and soaked, hopefully May 10 they go in the ground under the protection of cold frames. The last frost has been around the end of MAY the last few years. I Picked up some small 800w ceramic heaters for the 4x4x8 cold frames incase the temps are going to get too low at night. I'm In northern Minnesota.

OK. Then I have a question for the "Mooners". LOL. Do we start seeds on the 29th? Or would that best be the transplant date? Whatever Carlos is doing is certainly working.

I believe it to be the best day to start the seeds. It is also interesting that the 29/30 April time frame is not the only one, just the closest to our typical sowing time frame for late September or early October harvest. Depending on the weather conditions in a particular area, I believe they should simply hunt for the nearest new moon time frame, Australia as an example.

I used to talk a lot to an old farmer on my mail route, he always swore by planting on St Edwards/ or Anthony's day? Not sure what day that is, but as I read this posting, it brought back that memory...
(Thanks Joe, even though you are gone buddy, I still took some things from you!)

Yes Owen, you are right. Steve, those two days would be great for starting day as well as for transplanting day; but like they are closest to the mathematical ideal starting days than for the mathematical ideal transplanting days, I've choosen it like starting date. It is said that the moon influence is got by the seed when it is awakened; normally the chosen date is used for both till the soil and sow the seeds in the same day, but for our business it has to be different. I found no advantage in start very soon. If you live in a warm country, you just don't need it; if you live in a cold country, soil is cold and plant development, even with cold frames, is slow, what is not good. This is not an idea from myself, of course, but many heavy hitters support it.

for all those with snow... there is hope... once it warms up it will all melt fast... two weeks ago i had about a foot of snow in my yard. today it is all gone except a little right next to the house on the north side. we're trying to send you the warm weather. :) it will happen sooner or later... i know you'd like sooner.

Well I planted March 1st, but this darn heat wave of ours in Phoenix has slowed my vine growth. We have already seen mid 90's temps.
Hehe just thought I would give you all a different perspective.
