I'm not sure if I have a problem or not. My pumpkin has started to "cantaloupe", that's not the concern. The concern is at the stem end there are splits that look like cantalouping but they are about an inch long. Should I be worried that one morning my pumpkin will be split wide open? I worked so hard on growing my first AG this year, that if anything happened to it I would just cry.

Are the splits opening? The fruit will start cantalouping at the stem end first. My first fruit cantalouped so bad it looked as though it was welts....Paul

Yes the splits are opened but there is no oozing of any kind. I was just concerned that it might be too heavy because the splits are mostly towards the bottom of the pumpkin and thought the weight was putting pressure on the skin. Thanks a lot for your help.

HI Flora:
If there around the stem where the stem meets the pumpkin thats normal if the pumpkin is on the large side.Sometimes they go 3 inchs long and an 1\8 of an inch wide . they will heal dust them with dry Captions fungi or Garden Sulfur.Hope this helped. Best of luck John G..

Thanks John. I wouldn't say it is real large est weight 286 lbs. To me it looks big concidering it's my first born. I'll take your advice and go out and put some fungi on her. I posted a few pictures of the cracks, they probably won't be posted until tomorrow. Thanks again.

hi Flora, being somewhat new to this you ought to treat yourself to some awsome giant pumpkin viewing.(close to home)This weekend fri., sat., and sun. at the Hillsborough County Fair in New Boston. Should be at least 10 or 12 entries with weights up to 700lbs. Pumpkins are displayed all weekend... take care, Jim from Goffstown

Hi Flora, glad you made it to the fair in New Boston. Competition is going to be HUGE anywhere you go this year.Treat yourself to the excitment of the Topsfield fair in Topsfield Mass. on Sept. 29th. You need a 350pounder or bigger to enter. You may not win anything but youll see the biggest and best in New England. Jim
