Are we all anxiously awaiting getting our pumpkins in the ground? I know I am! I'm just a noob, but I'm already hooked. Thanks to all your help, I may not make too big a fool of myself. LOL

This is an awesome site filled with great people. Let's not let the annual "winter blues" I've heard so much about get between us. Let's just write it all off as temporary insanity as a result of pumpkin growing withdrawal and get back to the fun stuff!

"It is the pumpkins that bind us!" :-)

Best wishes to you all this season

I have a freindly little "bigmax" pumpkin plant grown in a Huge pot next to my computer, Its just putting out its second true leaf, seed came from my HUGE 57# last year (the 121# didn't have any good seeds). This year I have some nice AG's to plant.

Take a deeeeep breath....let it out slowly......and relax!!
It is at least seven weeks before your (good) seed should be planted. Practise all you want on germinating techniques with your "puny seeds". Do you have your "game plan" well established in your mind?

I have gotten so itchy, I have been practicing my germination techniques. I started 6 seeds 10 days ago, 2 in plastic baggie with damp paper towel, 2 in peat pots with plastic grocery bag over them to create a greenhouse effect (then placed them on top of the fridge), and 2 more in peats inside of a cooler with heating pad underneath..

Of the 6 seeds, the method that has them the farthest along is the paper towel in the baggie (under the heater rung) method. Huge roots, while the others are starting to pop out of the soil slowly, these seem to be way out there. I am going to do 6 more seeds, all paper towel method this week and transplant them to see how long it takes them to start uptake of nutrients from the seed starter mix and get some color.

I have always been a peat pot in the cooler type guy, but may switch this year.. I feel more confident in this method now after seeing it work, and will be doing the 6 more just for extra confidence. Dont worry, the seeds I am practicing on are not 723 bobiers, they are from my 290 squash cull from 1998 of my Andersen 815 selfed.

I'm with Gordon... GO UTES!

Several inches of new snow this morning, probably six
inches total. It's gonna be a very late spring. Really
I'd like to get started with the gypsum now, but the
ground is still frozen.

Test germinations, 100%. Garden layouts, several. Hoophouse
drawings with specifications, ready to build. All I need is
a break in the weather!

Warm regards, Cliff

for all intensive purposes, it is spring here. My fruit trees are starting to bud, overnight lows are dipping into the 30* range only once every 4-5 days, and daytime highs are around 65*. It has been this way for about 2 weeks. I am cringing because last year we had a freak snowstorm in April. If it happens this year, I am sure to loose a lot of fruit from my trees. Either way, I do have a test plant that I have been playing with. Just for kicks, its going in the ground this weekend. If it survives through the next 5 weeks, it should be in the clear, and have a big headstart on the season! We'll see...

My Crocus are in full bloom and the Daffodils are just starting to open. The tulips still got a ways to go.

It is just a tease though. Like Stan said 7 weeks away befor seed starting.

Oh yeah G! lol.. I just grabbed the bag with the most seeds in it! lol.. I am nearing 40, so my mind isnt as sharp.. wait a minute, it never has been sharp... kewl. I got nuttin to lose then! haahaa..

We are actually out of the snow as of today (hoping I didnt just jinx the PA growers) and I did a molasses application to get those microbial critters workin.. I also added about 20 pounds of winter rye today, as I wont be tilling for 5 weeks, minimum, so I could get some more green manure for the early season nitrogen blast. I have to say though, I was happy walking in the patch for the first time since November. A shovel dropped into it and turned showed worms ( a nice sign after last falls gypsum may be helping leech the years of chem ferts out of the soil and bringing them back) and a very nice dark color. I cant wait to get my spring soil tests done to see where the manure, leaf, gypsum additions have taken my ratios and nutrient levels.

I am done changing my mind also.. here is my seed selections for 2004..

Patch # 1 - Bobier 723 and Knauss 898 (pollenator to be planted in here also, either 837 Waller or one of Tom Beachys crosses)

Patch # 2 - Pukos 805, Rockwell 879 and ROckwell 717. I will cross the two squash seeds with each other, and I will use the 837 Waller for crossing the 805 with..

One more spot in patch 2, that is for the mystery seed I put in..

Wow Rocky, that's quite the lineup you have there. They should do very well in that soil you have too! I'm only just starting to build my soil up to a reasonable level. I have a long way to go but I'm hoping for a couple of decent pumpkins.

I'll be planting the 1230 Daletas, 833 Ruff, 801 Black, and one of the VWO contest seeds. I'll also be starting a 760 Pappas and a 794 Wronski as backups.

A big thank you to everyone who sent me seeds!

I don't care how much I want it to be spring! When it storms and snows like it did last night (8 inches and still not done), and they cancel UNIVERSITY classes, that's a reason to celebrate!!!
