I was at my local co-op yesterday and saw some Howden pumpkin seeds. What kind of pumpkins are these? Are they the regular kind you buy around halloween? How large do they grow? Just curious, no info on seed packet. Happy Labor Day, hope yours won't be rained out like mine.

Howden pumpkins are sometimes considered the "Standard large pumpkin". Developed by John Howden in Mass. around the 1970's. They have a variety of shapes and weigh in the mid 20's. I planted about 1/2 lb of seed of these for the first time. So I will see what I come up with. Tom

There is also a related variety called Howden Biggies, same nice halloween pumpkins, just bigger, I think they average around 40lbs

I have a couple howdens growing this year. Right now it looks like the the shapes, sizes and color will make some great jack o lanterns for the kids.

20 acres of howdens growing here. They are a nice halloween pumpkins. Nice dark orange color and nice large stem. Last year I planted 5 acres of howdens and 5 acres of conneticut field. Howdens are a much nicer looking pumpkin and much heartier.
