I have read some things about using plastic on the pumpkin beds in this site. I use black plastic & weed stop porous fabric in my vegetable garden. It works fantastic! I thought no one used it for pumpkins because the need for secondary roots? Those of you who use it, do you use it primarily around the base of the plant for heat when it is small or the whole patch? I guess you could break holes in the plastic and bury vines? Thanks Doeski

It is used for warming up the soil in the spring. Look down about 6-8 threads below this about warming up the soil and hopefully that answers your question.

Since the Black versus Clear plastic debate rages on every year, I am conducting an experiment.
I have clear 6 mil plastic on one cloche. The other has a black tarp on it temporarily. Plus I dropped a black rubber pond liner on the frozen patch last weekend.
This weekend I plan to begin soil temperature testing to see which is warming up the most.

How did the experiment go Steve? I'm curious to see what worked better.
