Anybody have suggestions for getting a pumpkin ready for the fair? I've read a little about it, but I'd like to hear more. Thanks, Pappy

Pappy,
Once you've gotten it loaded, clean all traces of Captan off with a mild clorox and water solution. I know several growers who continually wash their pumpkins down with clorox to disinfect, later in the season. After it's dry, wipe the fruit down with lemon pledge. (Do this after it's loaded, because it can become rather slippery!)If you've got a "respectable" pumpkin, attach a couple gallon jugs of water with duct tape to each side of the vine. The pledge and jugs will reduce weight loss while enroute. You should also put foam or some type of cushion under the pumpkin, so the bumpy road doesn't "blow your orb!" Good Luck!

Have friends over the night before BBQ and Beer. Get the tractor ready with the front loader, pray that you don't drop it getting it to the truck. Load it , get a good nights sleep and have fun the next day. Suzy in Sloughhouse

Kilr,,,If you've got a "respectable" pumpkin, how much would it weigh to be respectable??

If it makes you smile with pride, and your family and friends revel over your success, and you remember back to younger days and all the warm feelings Autumn and pumpkins brought, then it IS respectable! I have beaten my personal best by 120# so far this year, and even if it weighed 125# (which it doesn't) I am enriched from the whole long, aggravating process to get this far. Weight is nice, but relationships with the friends and family of fellow pumpkin growers I have met, I consider "priceless"! Have you ever seen anyone, regardless of age, look at a giant pumpkin , and not smile? To me, that's what it's all about!

Well, I'm the proud father of a beautiful 196# (est) (BABY) girl. The stem split was so bad I couldn't take the chance of losing her to rot. Thanks all you growers out there for the valuable info. And thanks also to bigpumpkins.com for introducing me to the art of pumpkin growing. We'll be going to the county fair in about ten days to claim our blue ribbon. (I'll be wearing my big.pumpkins.com garb):^) Thanks again Pappy
