While searching for possible employment at the usajobs.opm.gov website, I happened to notice a very interesting position under "jobs in demand". The dept. of homeland security is looking for customs officers to halt the influx from "agro-terrorists"! (Their words, not mine!)Just another little thing we can be thankful to Dubya for! (I always thought that this was too much fun to be legal!)

I'm not so sure if I should add "agro-terrorist" to my business card, however! :>)

It does seem funny at a first look but if you take a step back they might be looking for poisoning in the food supply. Something like bannana's, peppers, tomatoe's ect. They have been worried about this for sometime. I know it's harder to trade seeds across borders but I think we just got "herded" into something much larger. They are not after us, we all know that but if they let us slide, then another small group slide, and another.....well then they are useless at stopping whatever real threat they are worried about. Do you ever wonder sometimes how many plots may get stopped that we never know about ( and shouldn't so to prevent copy-cats)..Or what some of the legitimate threats are that we don't know about.
Am I upset about the new problem trading seeds...Hell yea I am, but as corny as it may sound I have to trust that our government is doing the best they can to protect it's people. I remember after the Towers collapsed the first thing everyone said was from here on out life is going to be a lot different...Well I guess it's our turn to notice it now............Paul

In 2001 we had an outbreak of Foot and mouth disease which saw 6 million animals destroyed at a cost to the country of about £15 billion source one piece of infected illegally imported meat.

I've decided not to send over any more seeds to the U.S. without the proper paperwork.Illegal seed trading is not the image I want to project for this hobby.

We had the same problems Mark described. All caused by infected food or additives like fish-, bone- or blood meal or anything containing cattle brain being illegaly imported and later used in cattle-breeding.
But what the heck does that have to do with our seeds?

Floh,
I can tell you what it has to do with my stance on this issue.
I am a farmer and also for want of a better word an ambassador for the hobby of Pumpkin growing in my country.
I want to be seen to comply with any bio security rules that apply regardless of how relevant they may seem.In the wake of our 2001 FMD epidemic failure to do so doesn't feel right and could also be portrayed badly by the media.
I realise this will seem like an overeaction to some if not most but thats just the way it is for me.
