OK everyone, I'm not sure if I'm joining the land of the living, or leaving it, but I've recently gotten engaged. We're thinking of a fall wedding, and have an interesting idea. My fiancee and I would like to have our faces carved in a pumpkin, and then have it on display at the reception.
My question is, can it be done. Are there artists out there that are good enough at carving, to actually make the faces look like us?

I have no clue about the carving, I'd just like to offer my congratulations. Best wishes and hopefully pumpkins won't get in the way of your marrige....or is it the other way around..... Joking aside, my wife and I wish you both the best. Alan

Congratulations Smitty to you & the lucky lady.
There are carvers that posess this skill (certainly NOT me! LOL). There was one such talented individual at Topsfield this year. Give me a day to look through the files where I keep such things.

Hey Smitty........There is a man and wife combo who sculpt some of the best associated with the Northwest Growers. Snoop around this site for carved pumpkins and you can find several carvers. Don't know if any have the portrait skills as they are nearly always sculpting character images.
.........Aside from the sculpter hunt my hearty best to you and yours. Go for it. That sir is for both issues. :)
....If you have a local college do not overlook consulting the head of the art department. From time to time outstanding student sculptors are in residence. Pumpkin as a medium is easy to sculpt.

Yes that's them. The man at Topsfield I highly recommend. His name is Hugh McMan (not sure of the spelling). He did an amaising portrait of a ship this year. He told me he's been doing it for 25 years. And congratulations to you! Alex.

Smitty,
You may want to consider http://www.pumpkinlady.com. She carves requests into those fake pumpkins so at least it would be something you enjoy for more than a few days.
Good luck with the marriage. It's been five years for me and I still haven't adjusted to it. I hear nagging in my sleep.
