This morning I discovered mice tunnels under my oldest pumpkin (now picked )and a smaller one next to it rotted from the inside out.

I keep fresh Rodex in little containers around the patch for the entire growing season. They are attracted early on to the compost and manure in your patch, and are now in search of a winter "condo". I have never had this problem with mice, and being a small farm, there are plenty of 'em around.

This may sound a little strange but I keep a small snake in my patch to conrol rodents. Just a suggestion.

I asked my mom if I could get a snake for that and she fliped, then I asked if I could use my big fat cat, and she told me he's a house cat, not a farm cat. I can never win. lol.

We live on a small farm. Mice are around untill my black panther runs accross (over) them. Actually my barn cats do a pretty good job with the rodents. I just need to be carefull with my pitchfork. I was showing my wife and kids what NOT to do with it, and you guessed it, I speared an AG pretty good. It was a small one. Only 25 lbs of what was left. Chickens liked it. Tom

I found a green and black racer snake on the pumpkin leaves the other morning. He was eating the white flies. When I get the film developed I'll post the picture. NO, I won't pick up the snake. The friendly ones are OK as long as I don't find a rattlesnake.

I have a snake, a stray cat, and most recently spiders in my backyard to control rodents and insects.

it seems i do more damage to my pumpkins than any varmint or bug could think of.. twice already i thought i could do a one handed move on a couple of basket ball size pumpkins, you know pick it up i one hand and slide a board under them with the other hand... WRONG!!! both times when i tried that i heard something that sounded like like a cucumber breaking in half and yep thats right i cracked the stems on both of them, guess i couldn't learn on the first one so i had to prove it to myself that i could do it again.... sometimes i think i should stay in my padded room...

I hope I don't have a mice problem with the pumpkins this year, I wouldn't want to kill any of them. We had a couple of cute little brown field mice running around the yard last fall and winter. After the first snow last year, I saw these tiny little foot prints in the snow on the deck, the mice were getting the bird seed for the feeder (of course all of the birds had gone South already). Haven't seen any mice lately, of course this time last year there was still alot of construction going on in our neighborhood.

No thanks Jeff. There is a BIG difference between cute little brown field mice, and rats. Like the difference between a garden snake and a boa.

First time,
Those "cute little brown field mice" have probably burrowed under your pumpkin and are setting up a "nice little cute brown field mice condo" for the winter. Pumpkins and mice are like oil and vinegar, they don't mix well.

They haven't gotten to my pumpkins yet. Went out to the patch today, I posted pictures of the three I have growing right now in the photo gallery today.
Even though my cats are house cats only, there are lots of otehr cats walking through the neighborhood, and sitting in my backyard (my cats sit at the back door watching them).

I have seen a couple of rats running along the lower runner on my wooden fence getting into my little boys rabbit pen and eating its food. I let my stupid weiner dog chase after them and didn't think anything about it until one morning i went out to my patch and noticed one of my recently set pumpkins half eaten! Off to Lowe's i went and bought rat baits and traps. The rats are too smart for the traps but have eaten some of the bait. My weiner dog located their nest.It was in my "HOBO BARREL", a fifty five gallon drum( a Mississippi chimenea!) I use to burn debris. there were at least four or five in there. One got out before i could douse 'em with gas and lit the barrel up. I could let you use my stupid weiner dog if you want.
