I was looking through the photo gallery and found this. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/DisplayPhoto.asp?pid=419&gid=1
Read what he did to it. What do you think the problem was? Has that happened to anybody else?

Here is a description of the product that he used directly from the Schultz web site:
"Helps reduce transplanting shock. Contains powerful rooting hormones that stimulate new root development. Use when transplanting all ornamental plants, flowers, shrubs and trees (not for use on edibles). Great for bare-root roses and other bare-root perennials. Use when repotting houseplants. Use regularly on established plants to promote greater root mass development."

From the look of the seed in his post I would say that you shouldn't use that product to soak your seeds in. Probably not bad to use it after you have transplanted your seedling outdoors though.

It looks to me like the dilution rate of the rooting hormone was off. PGR's (hormones) are heap big powerful. Rate & timing are critical to success. When all goes as planned the results are wonderful. When off...yikes. Cost us the season here last year. LOL

One time I experimented with one of the "rooting hormones" which are usually a combination of indolebutyric acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acit (NAA). I used about six different concentrations of the compound on the seeds and young plants (half were above the recommended concentration and half were below). I grew the plants for 2-3 weeks indoors and then examined the plants and root systems. Most of them ended up with deformed roots and leaves and they were much smaller than the plant without the compound. Who know what the plants would have looked like several months later but the initial results weren't very encouraging.

My experiments were pretty limited (I could have experimented with different timing of the application and different concentrations) but I gave up and decided to bag the rooting compounds.

Used root hormone this year on 6 plants, at planting and 3 days later suggested dose or higher....all 6 split their stems and stopped growing. Won't try this again or if so,
would suggest no more than one dose. Half dead crow
