Is there anyone who thinks a once a year chat on breeding is a worthwhile idea? If so, how should it be done? How many would like to participate or just sit in and soak things up? How long should it last, when should we do this, and what time should we kick things off?
Please, anyone else thoughts about such a thing please give some input, e mail me in private if you prefer. I copied and pasted below a bit from the "hybrid Vigor" thread which made me think many growers might be interested in doing it this winter... and perhaps yearly.
I'd love to hear different ideas and compare notes with others... We did this once last year and I think we all got some good input and theories from everyone who took part. It won't be as good as going to Niagara [all you lucky people]...LOL... but yeah, there are lots of thoughts on this subject, and it would be great if some long time growers joined in!
I think it's up to everyone to make suggestions and comments, as this should be everyones breeding chat. I know a good deal of certain specific things on AG breeding, but other growers may have better knowledge and can provide some facts or share some of their findings. Thats what it's about, right? We learn from one another and maybe try new or proven things methods others discovered. I could share some of the things I've picked up on, evidence and some proof which supports my own breeding theories, and there are many others who have a data bank full of information.
It sounds like a win win thing for everyone who grows AG's... we all come out smarter... OR... we confuse ourselves by listening to other ideas which contradict our own... LMAO!!!

There seems to be a lot of growers who are interested, as there were 40 thread on hybrid vigor in just 5 days, and lots of different thoughts and ideas on this matter...

Keynote speaker (such as yourself Welt, Beachy, Earnie, etc) whose name is in color the night of the chat. Just like the featured chat sessions are done now.
Maybe a pre-registration with a 5 question limit to keep things managable? Open forum later.
Asign start times for questions by number so everyone doesn't explode all at the same time?
Start with some predetermined questions & then segque into a cracker barrle discussion after the tempo is established?
Squashers one night. Pumpkins another?

Yes, of course, this should be done with the basic principles being strongly presented, in the opinions, of the speakers. Hopefully examples of the routes to success would be posted with the facts or theory.
Specific answers to crosses to this or that specific seed would be darn hard, for off the top, of anyone's head. Could that kind, of an answer, require the question be submitted, in advance? I can see a hundred what can I cross with _____ popping up on the spur of the moment.

I agree Doc... this shouldn't be a "help me figure out what to cross" chat...LOL! that would take away from the initial plan, which is to discuss/ debate/ talk/ whatever, about breeding methods, theories, observations, plans, ideas, and such. Asking questions is fine, but lets not keep them from interupting the main goal... listening to & comparing info to better understand what may be the best methods of breeding these things.

just thinking out loud here.... food for thought
... plan well... we can have a general free for all any time we want... that's what chat is. seminar implies organization... several different classes... a week apart ? begining... R r - basic traits, basic theory etc- you are saying maybe we don't need this?... i bet there are many who would tune in. intermediate... general AG theory - more in depth -cross backs, seeking desirable traits and "hybrid vigor" advanced... long term plans ... what are you going to plant and why! is this a good cross why ? why not ?
take questions in advanced... like a week early... set a period of time 1-2 hours... ( of course some will want to stay after and chat more) figure about 1/2 the time for lecture and 1/2 the time for questions. sent out matterial in advance... ie... some questions with the answers, diagrams, charts, definition (Big R little r) so on), etc... email them - people could print them out and follow along... excel, word, power point, what ever ...

Not bad input... thats what I was hoping to get, ideas just like that! I really like the idea of a couple day thing, hell, even a Monday - Thursday event, giving more time for individuals to speak. Example: Monday Tom Beachy has the room, Tuesday would be Nick Welty,Wednesday would be Joe Atlis, Thursday would be Mike Nepernery. I think questions should just be answered in the chat room. Each of the speakers have their own personal ideas and theories, nobody agrees totally with the others which is why I think the chat room is the place to answer them. The individuals I've picked in my head to participate might not have time for this, and if they do, I don't think it is fair to expect them to answer 37 questions, post all of the answers, then go in chat room typing forever all night. If something like Neperneys Hybrid Vigor primer explains their views, then no need to re hash them if there is something the speaker can make reference to. Sure, any speaker could write something, create charts, whatever... and Ken and John might put a link in for everyone to go to.
Are the Monday- Thursday speakers good candidates? Are they game to do this?
