Autumn Man

Green Bay, Wisconsin

Hi
I just started planting some large pumpkins, but I don't really do to much with them to get them to grow huge. I just plant, fertilize and let nature water them.
My part time hobbie is planting 20 acres of Howden pumpkins to sell this fall for carving, selling them locally or to supermarkets.
I would like to know if it would be alright to post problems, issues, pictures or comments here. The reason I'm asking is because I currently have a problem with my pumpkins and want to know if I can discuss them here, even though I'm just an average grower.
Thanks
btw...I live in Peshtigo Wisconsin, 45 minutes north of Green Bay. If you havn't heard of Peshtigo I'm sure you have heard of Green Bay....haha

Thanks Paul
To give everybody an idea of my setup, I'll explain some things......
I use a converted over planter to plant my pumpkins. I planted the rows 9 ft apart and the seeds were anywhere from 15" - 36" apart. I am still working on getting the planter to plant consistenly spaced. I cultivate the rows as much as possible to eliminate as many weeds. But weeds still appear in the row itself. Unless I weed by hand.
The first sign of cucumber beetles, I sprayed and eliminated the bugs. I only sprayed once, since I didn't see them reappear. (I'm going to post some pics to show the pumpkins when they were small.
The plants have since grown into each other and now I have a field of vines and leaves. But now I have a problem. Alot of the plants are turning a lighter green, yellowish color by stem. Then they seem to be turning brown and dying. This seems to be mostly across the whole field. The vines look green and healthy. I pulled out one of the plants and the roots and stem looked good. I really didn't see anything wrong there. (I will post some pics when I can get them downloaded from my camera).
Does anybody have any idea what this could be and what I can do for it now and for next year to prevent it.

Any information is GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I also planted Howden pumpkins (about 1/2 lb of seed). I direct seeded June 3rd, my problem was powdery mildew. My patch is 52' x 450', field corn on one side and a few apple trees on the other. I'm really going to prune those apple trees down to size later. In areas of my patch that no apple trees are present, what you are describing, is the same thing happening to mine (without the powdery mildew). Where did you get your seeds? When did you plant? Tom

Hey.....
One field is 11 acres and the other is 9 acres. I found from the county agent that the problem I'm having is mostly pests. The original leaves have gotten eaten by insects and turned yellow and are dying, but the vines are nice and healthy. So they are looking better and better everyday as the vines grow.
blkcloud..... I pick these pumpkins the ole fashion way...by hand. So what are you guys doing this fall? haha
I will be posting some new pics of the patch tomorrow, but I am posting one picture today. Check it out close. I call it the mr. bill blossom. You've got to see it.
Thanks for all the nice welcomes!!!!
