It appears to me that the price of many 2003 "unproven" seeds are being offered in certain places for as much as $25 per seed.(Before postage!) For those with unlimited funds, I suppose that there's no problem paying that much for a seed that may never do well. For those just starting, or of "modest means", excellent seed stock can be obtained from seedoutlet.com, or by requests to the grower, and in the near future, from this site, for merely the cost of shipping. (Please give John the time he needs to get up and running with this courtesy he provides!) Let's be thankful to those who have kept this a hobby that can be affordable to all! And now my question, who reading this has produced a giant pumpkin from a free seed? (Please include weight!)

Kilr, I've also seen 2003 seeds offered for $20 or so a seed. Where I saw this, my assumption was that the money was going to support a specific growing organization. I don't have a ton of money, but don't mind supporting these organizations once in awhile. However, you are right. For little or no money, you can get very good seed from several sites and also from many very generous people. I sent a note to one grower requesting 1 seed and offering some of mine. He sent me a couple seeds from each of his pumpkins (probably 10 seeds in all) and didn't ask for anything. If I ever get anything worthwhile, they will be the first people who get seeds from me.

I highly suggest you spend your first $15.00 - $20.00 joining and going to your state or area growers association. Secondly attend a seminar or field trip and just generally make some friends. ...Please this is not bragging at all. In one year taking the above advise I have more options to grow a good seed than I will ever have time or life left to grow. I even have helped out another grower or two with seed they may use in their crosses to a dream seed from their own patch. ....I said I would not collect and save seed. I lied! It's great fun making new friends and dreaming new dreams.

Good advise above. I agree.
On the other hand, many people would be far better off paying $15-25 for an unproven 2003 seed with very good genetics than paying hundreds of dollars for older seeds at some of these auctions.

I have tons of FREE seed that I keep posting for anyone who wants them. Many new guys have been taking me up on the offer but so many left to give away. I also have some good proven seed for free as well, I just haven't had the time to compile a list. As always...e-mail me for an address and I'll not only put my genetic crosses in, but will throw in some decent proven as well. They're here, waitin' on ya'll!
