In my patch of Howden Pumkins, the areas that are shaded/under some old large apple trees, hardley have any fruit. I figured, when i planted, that the fruits would not be as large because of the moisture taken by the trees. Are apple trees causing other problems other than moisture loss. These pumpkin plants seem to begin covered in a white film on the leaves. But only in the treeline of these apple trees. Maybee it is the falling apples? Tom

The white film is probably powdery mildew. Any place that stays moist is more likely to get it than a dry area. The shade from the tree is probably the greatest cause.

I also have some AG vines that the last 6 ft or so are shaded by my garage & shed & the plant fails to open females in the shade. I think the shade has something to do with the females, but my plants don't have much ground moisture and no mildew. 'skeer sounds right about the powdery mildew.
