1. What type of shade structure should I build to protect the whole plant from the sun? 2. If I prune and control all of my vines how many plants can I grow in a backyard garden? 3. If they're shaded and I mist them will the leaves still get scorched? 4. I have just set, (Knock, knock, knock.), a fruit on my 869.5 calai will it break 100 pounds by oct. 6th? 5. Are the redskins going to win a game this season? 6. what are the best plants to grow in the heat? 7. What are the basics of cloning? Thanks, Tom

1. Shade the pumpkin, not the plants, the leaves need sun to photosynthesize. 2.Big pumpkins have been grown on a 500-700 sq. feet area. 3. I think you're scorching may be due to fertilizer or insecticide burn, in extreme heat and sun, new growth will show burn. Also, at this stage a lot of center leaves yellow and die. 4. Good luck! Sept. is an extremely slow month for growth! 5.Who cares? 6.Ones that can take the heat! 7. Put "clone" into the search box on this site. kilrman

1. I used an old umbrella from our old patio furniture. Only used it from 11am - 4pm on 90+ degree temp. This umbrella let some light pass thru, but kept the temp down on the fruit. Tom

For shade I used sliver tarp on a triangle shaped frame, that way I was able to adjust it's position over the pumpkin so it would allow for shade on the pumpkin only and avoiding leaf coverage, this seems to have worked fine, we had a long spell of 90 degree days with full sun, and the pumpkins are still going.

it wouldn't be full shade and the roof would be retractable. Yes the 974 was in the package you sent me, I'll grow that next year and a 600 desrosiers. Kilr, you're mean. The clones main died, but it still has a 6" secondary. Thanks for all of the info. I'll put it to good use next year. thanks again, Tom

I bought tan and blue shade cloth from Home Depot. It seems to work. I cover the pumpkin, use four rewood stakes but leave room for air to circulate.

I have a tramppoline in my backyard and part of one of my plant's main vines has grown under it, that part of the vine is beautiful, dark green leaves and vine. I might build a shade structure of that material. the plants would be shaded on hot days, but not full shade the leaves will still be able to photosynthesize, on days with temps in the 80's and lower the roof will be removed. The the sides would be made of wood posts with tyveck around them to make a windbreak. Do you think this will work? Tom
