I have a 675 Hester waiting to plant. Quinn grew the 899.5 with it this year. Went 13.27% over estimate. Have not decided what to pollinate it with. But I want to keep It dark green.

I'm going to give a unproven one a shot, Wayne's 756.8 (Hester 895.5 x Hebb 990) I like the fact it brings 2 completely different parentages together. Plus the 990 threw green for him.............Paul

I going with the 834, only this time I will provide late season plant protection as we frosted out on September 12. Let's see I lost 20 days at an average of 10 lbs per day = 200 lbs + 834# = 1034 lbs.

You know the best part of this thread ?
Any one of the above could produce a 1000 lber, I think the only seed that has been widely grown for green has been Brett's 895.5 ( and it has come real close several times) Not near as many folks grow for the green so there are probably a large amount of good green genetics just waiting to be tried. Let's not forget Mark's green monster off of Glen's 455.4 that would have easily blown past the 1000 lb mark had a blossom end split not have ended it prematurly.

been thinking of trying giant squash for a few years but have never grown one. the challenge of growing giant pumpkins isn't there for me anymore. Not sure which seed to plant, I've got a lot of studying to do on squash. the 990 hebb has come close to 1000 on a couple of occasions.

990 is nice but....2 out of it's 5 listed (AGGC) progeny are pumpkins. What's that 40-45%?..not good odds for "true" green.
The 732* is a excellent prospect. Surprised it took people this long to notice it.

There's another "unknown" green cross out there that weighs heavy, came from heavy green, and *should* throw heavy green. My choice to cross with the 732*...

I like the looks of the 980 Razo. It's an 895.5 Hester crossback, and the hybrid portion is from the Stellpflug squash strain which pumped out his world records in the years '88-'90. It's amazing how much simpler squash family trees are from all the sib and self-pollination, yet they still perform well considering how few people grow them.

I just though it was interesting that, for instance, all the genes of the 980 could be thought of coming from the 900.8 and the 653.5, both of which have some significance for me. The 900.8 I actually touched, and I remember seeing a picture of the 653.5 in the 1990 guiness book of world records, and thinking, now how the hell do you grow something like that?!?

12/25/2003 11:02:21 AM

hey you

Greencastle, PA

check out the 546 Welty too. 703 Smith x 744 Welty. both 100% green, throw heavy fruit (703 is 3rd gen. 935 Lloyd) and the 744 had 2 squash that could have gone 1200+, but nic said that he did something wrong and killed them. that's all i know about that, but they were both over 600 pounds at the time.
