it seems that the stems on my older pumpkins are turning into dust. there are no insects that i can see.what could this be?

are they rotting? do you see them become wet, and then rot away?

When they become wet they turn to mush. I have already lost the vines at the stump. Now they are rotting at the pumpkin. The plants are older and the pumpkins are almost ripe it would be nice to have stems!
