Questions. When growing a christmas tree. If the pumpkin is set on the left side of the vine does the right side become nonproductive to the fruit. Similiar to a flag which must have the fruit on the secondary vine side. Do flags produce big fruit or are they mainly for genetics?

Pumpkins are not "sided" lol. Sources (leaves) dont care what side of the main vine they are on, they still pump juice to their respective sinks (pumpkins). A pumpkin on the left side of the vine will recieve as much photosynthate from the right side as it will the left. (Although, the left may be contaminated, as it supports howard dean)
Flags have the potential for big fruit as well, but I would limit their use where space is an issue. Historically, xmas style has produced the largest fruit.

Why does the flag pattern require the fruit on the same side as the secondaries? Could the fruit be grown just as large on the non secondary vine side?

Quinn, How large was your flag pattern(sq. ft.). I'm thinking of planting another plant this year in a smaller area and a flag pattern would work out fine.
Thanks, Phil

Just one, more question, How much vine and plant growth do you allow past the set fruit?
Thanks

Sorry for the ignorance Joze. I know I have seen this topic come up before about fruit setting on the secondary vine side of a flag pattern. Quinn and you have helped to clarify this for me. I could not understand the importance of setting the fruit this way. I think this recommendation came from one of the growers chats. It might have been from Brett Hester? My concern is to try and reduce the Sq.ft. required to grow a large one. Quinn seems to have done this with great success this year. All of his fruit are grown on plants under 400sq.ft.

My flag pattern would not be consididered a true flag I don't cut the vines of at the main I let them grow two to three feet on most of the plants. I like 20 feet across so If I let the long side grow 18 feet I would let the short side grow 2 feet. most of my plants were grown like this mostly to save space so I could grow more plants and it takes a lot less time to take care of, Past the pumpkin I have another 100 to 150 sq feet. Joze makes a very good point most big pumpkins are grown xmas style.
