Just saw Jim Beauchemin give a presentation on giant pumpkins at the New England Vegetable and berry conference in Manchester, New Hampshire. He wasn't scheduled but someone else couldn't make it so he filled in. It was a very funny and entertaining presentation. Not too much on cultural practices that you havent all heard before, but a few things he mentioned: --he thinks leaving fruit unshaded not only stunts growth but leads to sunburn and blistering on the fruit --he uses pulp mill material under his pumpkins --he lets the main vine grow out way past the fruit. He feels that the long vine "backfeeds" the fruit
