Well my growing season looks like it has come to a close. After a long battle with powdery mildew I have now just discovered BIG FAT vine borers. The fruit has stoped growing. (Conneticut Field). Well folks thanks for everything. Mabey next year. Anyone else have a horrible growing year?

Powdery mildew is early this year on Long Island and depending on where you are it probably will get you good. I know...Im done. I have a fruit that hasn't grown in a week and a fruit that split Thursday. Pulled a 900lyons on Friday and the other lyons with the "done fruit" is in terrible shape. I sprayed better this year than any other year and didn't overhead water. A combination of 90*-100*F for a week, drought all summer here, and then 6 days or rainy weather did me in with my crowded plants. Never worked so hard to get a 400lb fruit in my life......there's always next year PlumpPumpkin....take solace in the fact that its a tough year here for many. ((except Farmer Scott who always seems to pull something big from the ashes...)......G

Don't feel bad my season ended july 25th due to the extreme heat. Only problem I put more seeds in july 28th " The season ain't over till I say it's over" . Sorry to also hear about your loss Glen, mabye next year we can grow 1000 lbs of green between the 2 of us. Oh Well , keep the spirits up & start looking for the perfect seed for next year......Paul

What bad things can you say of a seed that has grown a 1010lb pkn,and squash of 986,895,862,742,etc....and numerous 700+ pkns? My patch was the problem, and maybe that little electrical fire................still the world's best proven squash seed (until my 455 weighs in around the world). 1000lbs of green between us doesn't leave any for you Paul !!!!Make it 2000lbs and i'll think about it !......G

I better explain a little better, not 1 500 lb fruit but 2-250's . you see our weighoff's are not until Oct. 17th & if I get a fruit set by Sept 18th that will give me 30 days & if Mark P. can get 700 lbs. in 30 days I hope I can reach a measly 250. Now I know my 353 might not be as good as Glen's 455, but if it is 1/2 as good I'm in the race. Now to reach this I have modified my misting system " there is a picture of my misters in the photo gallery" I have placed in center rods & lowered the sides. So if I have a fruit going in Oct. and cool weather rolls in all I have to do is drape plastic over the frame and ride it out to the show. Everyone in the community thinks I'm a little crazy but I would like to know what a jury of my " pumpkin peers" think. Thanks for your input.....Paul " IT AIN'T OVER TILL WE SAY IT'S OVER!!!!!!!

Im moving my cloned 502ciliberto pollinator into the old 900lyons spot in the hopes of setting a fruit and getting something for the fair. Crazy? You Bet ! Damn proud of it too !! Hope to set one up on a planter adjacent to the patch to allow for a nice warm tent in the fall.....its in the blood !...G

PUMPKIN SCHMUMPKIN! We're all BOZOS on this bus! This is my fourth year growing, and I can't stand hearing anymore about a "first timer" growing a 750#+ pumpkin. I've worked my butt off, and last year fell short of my personal best(481.5#) by an ass kickin 3 1/2 pounds! (I think a nice mud clod would have made all the difference!)If I don't make a decent weight this year, I'm taking next year off to find out what the rest of the world does in the summertime! (But, I'll BE BACK!)
Praying for a miracle!

I spray Daconil regularly but it does not seem to be affecting the mildew and it is still spreading, killing the leaves infested by it. Im guessing my season will over in a month or less......trying to pack in a few more pounds.

Don't worry, kilr, you'll get a 500+ this year. I'm also tired of seeing the other first year growers getting a 700 pounder in 30 days, when I'm working my ass off in the heat and humidity and only getting an etimated 23.2 pounds. I've had enough! But I'll have expeirience for next year at least. Good luck, Tom

Well y'all won't have to worry about this first timer growing a huge one this year, unless it's a Big Max the only one I have left on that plant is 59"OTT the 12 days.
I can related to the splints, aches and pains. While I only got a few bruises diving under a table during a tornado warning this weekend. Since I moved here, I always been worried them during a watch or warning, while at home, well not anymore, there is nothing like being out in the middle of the Iowa National Forest camping with the cubscouts, and being close enough to SEE the tornado on the ground. I then sprained my knee on the 2 1/2 mile hike through the forest the next day. Would have like a few beers then warm or not.... Karen
