For those of you not aware, I am chronicling my experience this year growing the 2 year old Scherber clone.(There are only about 12 of these plants out there!)Due to the fact that I only have a 35mm camera, my postings are a bit delayed. Just go to the "diary" section under kilrpumpkins.
To anyone else out there who is growing "the clone", how's it going?

The Scherber 746.8# pumpkin was grown in 1997! Seed from this pumpkin has grown 1 in the 500# range, 4 in the 600# range, 1 in the 700# range, and last year Mr. Scherber himself grew a 1009.2# pumpkin from this seed! This pumpkin was grown in Colorado, and another grower, Marc Sawtelle took cuttings from this plant and kept them alive all winter. This spring the clones were offered to the public on a first come-first served basis. There are approximately 12 of these being grown across the country. This is "cutting edge" pumpkin growing at it's best! Anyone that is growing a "hot seed" this year, can grow the same plant next year without having another seed! For more info, type "clone" into the site search box. And THANKS, MARC!

jeff352,

I have one pumpkin left on the Scherber clone plant. It was pollinated with the Stelts 801. Todays estimate is 335#. I have 7 other plants going, so my care of this plant has been limited. The fruit is still smooth and cream colored. The Stelts cross should give it some of that "bright orange" color. E-mail me around Christmas, and I'll send you some of those seeds. Anyone else interested in viewing my diary of the clone type in "entire diary" under kilrpumpkins, and you can read "the rest of the story"!

Thanks for the information Kilr. Mostly the posts here are about help and questions, which is great for learning about growing pumpkins.

It was nice however to learn about the history of plants and the changes that can happen from introducing new parentage to a pumpkin. It amazing to what lengths, some growers go to. I am always impressed with your advice. I too would like to try some of your seeds.

Kilr, my clone is doing quite well. I could'nt wait untill 50 day's to measure, especially since "Madman" called me last night pumping me for techniques. I do need to record it's growth for the "Expierment" so here goes. 8/12/01 At 6:30 pm circumfrence was 91". Today 8/13/01 at 6:30 pm circumfrence was 97". Unless I missed a bid fat spot yesterday that would be about 37# in 24 hours! The plant is pruned to about 1000', I have culled to one five lober 24' or so from the stump. Pumpkin looks just like yours in the post, (except except for the weeds) mine is level stem to blossem, with big "bumps" everwhere, and appears to be slightly taller. Problem here is 90+ heat this last week, been hard to keep specimins hydrated with out waterlogging.
