Check out these articles from 1927. The authors of these articles mapped out where the roots actually are on a squash and pumpkin plant at different stages of growth.

These articles are very interesting. They gave me a new perspective on the plants. I will change several things after reading these articles.

Very interesting. Six foot tap roots. Sounds to me like consideration for sub verticle irrigation is going to gain a larger acceptance. Thanks Jim.
