I have limited my plant to a single pumpkin. I just removed a 175lb pumpkin from my patch. What can I do with it? Can I store it until October in fridge? Does anyone buy these for store displays in mid-august? Any help appreciated.

You can't put it in the fridge. It needs to have circulating air. Any cool, dark, dry place will do to keep it good for several months. The dark doesn't need to be total darkness just not bright light.

I'm sending a 250lb cull to the local fair. I tried to save the things last year but because they were immature they didn't store and went rotten. Other options. Let the kids carve them. Pumpkin smashing contests. Target practice with your weapon of choice. Post them as sentinals around the patch to warn off evil spirits. Good luck.

Brian, I just culled a 158# Holland 1026 today for the Airway Heights Festival Days Parade. You should have seen the looks from young, and old alike..... Pumpkin Growers are truely unique, it's hard not to like farmers......... Best of luck, Gerry Gadberry...

Harold, Sounds like you want to win that six dollar prize money. I just hope it doesn't rot before then. I still have one on the vine just in case.

I just culled off Hercules and am going to put him into our local fair. I put him on a scale hear at home and he weighed in at 160#. I am putting him the back of the garage where it is cool. I hope he makes it until halloween. But I still have 2 more pumpkins. One is 113# and the other is 85#. I'm hoping there is still a chance for me to take one to weigh-offs in October here in Canby, Oregon.

if you want to store them- put them in a cool dry place. they should store well that way and make it till halloween -but some may not make it. you need to periodically check it to make sure it is not going soft, especially on the side that is down. they rot from the inside out and one day it will look fine and a couple of days latter you'll have a pile of mush. a 200 lb pile of mush isn't the funnest thing to clean up. another fun thing to do- is call up your local zoo and see if they will take it. Lots of animals will eat them. Elephants really love them. last year a guy in colorado took his 900+ pumpkin, and a few others to his zoo. he took some cool photographs of the elephants playing with and then eating them.
but be sure to call- some zoos won't take them. gordon
