My 582 Hester plant is now confirmed a double viner...... What can be done? Is there some sort of surgery that can be done to get it back to single? Can you terminate the double main and go with a secondary? What are the chances of the double vining to reoccur later on if you go with a secondary? Thanks for any advice.....Ben

Choose well Ben if you try surgery. I had one on an 845 Nesbitt this year. The one I kept turned to a flat vine at the next node, then returned to round at the following node. But the vascular system never really recovered & the vine remained weakened through the end of the year. I don't know if there might have been a better way to pick the keeper. I just assumed the more vigorous of the 2 was the one to keep. I was wrong. But who's to say the one I cut wouldn't have done the same thing.

I've heard of keeping a back vine going for this reason but didn't think to try that at the time.

Wait for someone with more vine training experience than me before making a decision. LOL

I've had a double vine split into two vigorous single vines and basically stay that way. Other times it just stays as a double. When I've let the double grow, I've found the secondaries don't develop properly, so perhaps your best bet may be terminating the double if it doesn't spit into singles soon and train one of the most vigorous secondaries (like the first one the plant put off) as the main. I've never had a secondary turn into a flat vine.

How have people who've grown big ones on double-vine plants pruned them and what was the result? I'm also curious to hear from them, although not with the urgency of Ben.

When I get a double viner, I'll let them grow for several days, to see which one is "rounder" than the other. The flattter one is removed. My 846 Calai did this and ended up growing a 673#er.

grew a 801.5 off a ribbon vine on a 1230 Daletas....just trim off growth till you get a normal secondary....go with that for your new main......you might lose abit of time, but it can be done.......

Ben,
Some of the 582's do double vine, while a few more fully flat vine. If it stays a true double vine, no problem, let it run, but if it continues the effaciation process and doubles again to a 4, then 8 ect, then remove it about 2 inches after your strongest normal secondary and treat that secondary as your main vine. You will lose about a week overall as the plant adjusts to what you did, but in the end you will have a much better chance for a superior pumpkin. I have did this to a 1230 Daletas plant and it grew a 1027.
Good Luck

I was searching for different thread but came across this one:

Interesting comment on the 'surgery' performed by Alan Nesbitt on a 723 plant.

Good Luck

Brett,
Thanks for the advice and I'll keep it going. Hopefully it will grow out of it. Encouraging to hear what you did with your 1230 plant! Ben

Erick,
Thanks for the link, might have to do the Nesbitt surgery soon. I tried it last year on my 797 Troy mutant but it grew in a tight curve and exploded......Ben

i tried surgery on mine this summer,a 500 Carlson. it didn't work. it went flat again.
surgery can make your vine grow in a spiral.

That is interesting Gordon....

I wonder what causes the vine to go spiral?
Last year I had my main go spiral after removing the tendrils when they are really small.

Any other spiral experiences out there?

the inside of the spiral is where the scar is. the growth there is not as much as everywhere else so a spiral results.

Gordon,
Thanks for posting those pics! Looks like they are hard to handle after surgery, going to be interesting to try and work out......Ben
