Yesterday I visited "The King" Howard Dill in Windsor, Nova Scotia. He and I live in Hants County, Nova Scotia (opposite sides).

I first met him back in May when I purchased my Atlantic Giant seeds at his store.

It was great to ask and receive pumpkin advice from him personally.

If any of you ever come to Nova Scotia, be sure to visit Howard. He is one of the finest people you will ever meet.

You can also visit the pond on the back of his property where the first recorded game of ice hockey was played back in the early 1800's.

I don't think he was born in the 1800's, he does have a 2 year old grandson

Without ever having met him I can tell you that Mr. Dill is a true gentleman and scholar. If not for him, his generosity, and his efforts, I doubt that any of us would be growing the pumpkins that we are. All kidding aside, this man has done more for some of us, than we'll ever realize! THANKYOU HOWARD, you'll always be KING and we owe it all to you!

How were the pumpkins able to go from World records in the 400-500lb range back in 1981 to over 1100lb in just so few years like that if they are from Dill's seeds?

I know they started from Howard Dill... BUT what exactly caused the big explosion in growth? Is/are there anybody else who was responsible specifically for the 1100lb pumpkins and what did they do to increase the weight so much?

well, now we have different fertillizers and fungicides and pesticides. Kilr his right, if it weren't for him there wouldn't be any of this.

Robert,
You left off one very important piece of information....
How big were his pumpkins?

Hi Stan,

I'm a newbie at pumpkin growing. My own pumpkin is (my biggest) is about the size if a bit bigger than a basketball right now, 34 inches around the circumference. I hope that Howard won't hate me for this but the biggest one I saw would be about 6 times larger than mine. He had a bunch of them there off in the distance too that I couldn't see.
