john d, i like the windbreaks i see you are using for your plants. how do you get them to stay up? i've been using plastic attached to my mini greenhouse, that goes up about 3', but the wind this year has been horrific. anybody else have some creative wind breaking ideas they could share? thanks, scott

Scott, I have heard of people using hay or straw bales or conservation fencing. Gophergirl

I am using snow fence with wooden lathe run through it. It too only goes up three feet but it is fairly easy to put up. Its not perfect but it also helps keep my dog out of the pumpkin patch. (Can be seen in background of diary photo)

I am using conservation fence....two layers...straw bales...Old patio doors, and every other piece of junk I can find to protect my baby. Also yes the wind this year is fierce, and is my biggest enemy...next to the cucumber beatles I found today swarming the blossoms of my plant. Do whatever you can and save them. My garden looks like a West Virginia lawn ornement. Eric

I use rebar to ancor the wall in place. The rebar is 4 feet long, and I sink about two feet into the ground. I use three bars per wall, one for each vertical support. Each bar goes through a hole I drilled in the base and on top to keep it from falling over I use a large zip-tie. They work well to hold the wall firm to the rebar.
This setup alows me to easily re-position the walls. I originally thought I would have to cut the zip-ties and replace with new ones every time I moved... but I am able to slip them up and down enough to save them.
I will try and take a detailed photo of the walls and post it in the Photo Gallery within a day or so.
