Does any body use straw as a ground cover to keep the moisture in and the weeds down?

I'm a third year grower and I haven't used it on my pumpkins but It works well on the strawberry patch. I think it would work but you might have to pull the straw away so it can get its roots anchored to the ground. I'm going to try it with my plant that is a little further behind to see how it works.

I used straw last year. It seamed to work really well at keeping the soil moist, cooler, and weed free. I opted not to do it this year because I heard that it makes a good place for the vine borers and squash bugs to hide.
