First of all, this is my first year. And I'm excited. I have three vines growing and one pumpkin on each vine. My question is, why is one pumpkin(12" in dia) green and the other two on different vines are yellow, 10" dia. They all look healthy and are growing. Should I be concerned? Is it true that the yellow color means they were not pollinated and will die off? Help!

Yo Mare, The green one is a squash and the other two are pumpkins...don't worry..all will be fine.

Cut that green thing out of there before it spoils the whole plant and you have a bunch of squash.

No, it may not be squash. I have jack-o-latern pumpkins (conneticut field) and they start out green and turn orange later in the season. Dont cut it out!

plumpPumpkin is right- just because it is green now doens't mean it won't be orange later. if fact my experience with AG's is that the greener they start out - the oranger they end up. they ones that start out yellow end up light orange, salmon pink or creamy white. so stick with it.

Keep the advice coming. I am enjoying finally connecting up with some other giant pumpkin people willing to share their knowledge. My next question is shading, what to use. Thanks everyone.

If the green thing is an atlantic giant and has any real size to it then it will likely be a "contest squash" at the end. They sometimes switch over to pumpkins when young...say up to four weeks of age. If its NOT an A.G., then it might be a pumpkin as "real pumpkins" are usually green until ripening or maturing......G

95% of all my pumpkins are yellowish-orange (the other white) between 50 pounds down to 110 pounds. The best measure for me is to continue to measure at the risk of stepping on a primary vine. If it continues to grow - color shouldn't matter. If growing slows begin trick or treating in September. Good luck. Gary Kennett Square, PA

The two pumpkins that started out on my wells 483 started out green and when they get the size of golf balls they start turning yellow! Chris
