HI NEW@IT: When the pumpkins are small under basketball size, don't push them to much,by push i mean,Watering, pruning, fertilizing all in the same day or too.Take it easy let them bulk up a bit.And don't terminate a vine that a small pumpkin is growing on before it's 50 pounds or so,I did and guess what happend "BOOM".When there over 200 lbs or so i start to prune vine ends first, once the whole plant has stopped growing and all the energy is going to the pumpkin thats when i start a regular fertilizing program . Hope this helped a bit . Best of luck .John G...

I see something different every day in here,,,it makes me nervous seeing all of this,,,I have a pumpkin that is set,,smaller than a baseball,,,,but it dosent seem to be growing in the last week,,,it's not shirvling,,,but dosent seem to be growing,,,and to top all that off,,,i read yesterday to give vine around where pumpkin is growing plenty of room,,so I go and dig up vine by pumpkin,,,gosh,,never reliazed the roots these vines put down,,,so,,someone tell me,,by upping the vine and taking roots off vinne so I could give the vine room for pumpkin to grow,,,will it make it(pumpkin)???Or did I screw up???

new@it, I know what you mean. The pumpkins are popping on my 631 Kuhn plant like popcorn. 6 so far. I have all but stopped pruning and I am doing little fertilizing. Seems to have slowed for now. I have not had one split in almost a week. Of course they aren't growing much either. It has been in the 40's four nights in a row at my house. John G's advice seems to be right on. Only my smaller fruit exploded. The two bigger ones on the plant didn't pop.
