When I bought my seeds at the store, the package had dates that said ___ numbers of days til harvest. But is that from the time of planting or the time of pollination? Also if you look at the photo gallery (just posted today, might not be there until tomorrow), Geoff (#1) is a very dark green, is that normal?

That number is from germination and is a "around" number. Figure anywhere around 70-85 days of actuall pumpkin growth from pollination date depending on fruit/plant/weather/problems. It is lkely that a dark green fruit without darker green stripes will remain greenish or greyish at maturity and would be considered a "squash" not a "pumpkin"......glenn

Can squash be carved like a pumpkin. If it is still green at halloween, I will probably paint it orange. Unless my son can come up with a color scheme or idea to decorate with a green "pumpkin".....Karen

It Could be conneticut feild pumpkins. They are green for a while and then right when you least expect it they start to turn orange. They are also called jack-o-lantern pumpkins

One year I started some regular pumpkins late in the season and ended up with green ones for halloween. I just carved them as normal pumpkns. Nobody ever said anything about it; if they're in a what dark area at night, and the inside is lit up, it is not that noticable. -Bruiser

You could always pull out my favorite shade of orange paint, "Chevy Orange" engine enamel and have at it with the spray can...will work for Halloween but not the contests.

I purchased my seeds at the local home improvement store, when we picked up the landscape edging for the flower garden, and my son said that he wanted to have his own garden (his help was planting the seeds, and probably won't help again until harvest time) and wanted pumpkins. I think they were "Burpee" seeds. And the label said Jack O' Lanterns, it was in a kid appealing package. I never heard of Alantic Giants, until I found this site. I am tempted to try them next year (if my hubby doesn't shoot me first for taking over the lawn), however I haven't seen any contest in our area, so we would only be growing them for Halloween.....Karen
