Someone told me that the really large pumpkins are really squash. Is this true? If so, what's the largest strain of true pumpkin known by name? I don't want a large pink "pumpkin" to carve with my two sons. I want the biggest pumpkin that holds it's shape and looks orange. Am I just confused by a friend???

i think the designation, but dont quote on this, between a squash and a pumpkin has to do with a stem. a hard stem is a pumpkin, soft stem is a squash, and as much as i hate to admit this, atlantic giants are technically squash.

I believe the largest species of true pumpkin (C. pepo) is conneticut field, or a similar variety. If you want a truly large fruit, then you must grow a squash (C. maxima) variety. Burpee's hybrid prizewinner, while considered a squash, produces very deep red fruits up to 300lbs. Great shape and perfect for carving. Who cares if the scientists call it a squash? Its a pumpkin to everyone who sees it!
