Hello:
I have a pumpkin thats growing awefully fast.It was growing 4 inchs in circ steady last week now the past two nights its growing a steady 6" in circ.My question is is 6" a night too much for a 60" in circ pumpkin. The pumpkin is 19 days old and theres two on the plant the other is growing fast also.Would removing a vine or two slow it a bit!!. Thanks for any replies in advance. John G...

It seems fast but world records have grown faster. It is riskier to have a fast pumpkin but if it doesn't break apart then you will have a big pumpkin by october. I wouldn't cut the vines because the plants energy would go only to the pumpkin causing it to burst. If your plant is to big then prune slowly maybe just a vine over a few days. Good luck!

P.S. What plant is this? I would like to grow one next year.

John...surely your 814 of a couple years ago put on some monster weight once or twice..is this one growing THAT fast? You have two on the plant...if you remove one the other will likely go faster....with two on the plant you can let them both grow and if you DO have a problem, then you'll still have one left. I wouldn't do anything now...you've got the backup so let them go--enjoy the ride. Are you in this for BIG pumpkins or just medium pumpkins?..........G (unfortunately, medium squashes, smaller pumpkin)

Thanks for all the replies,Glenn i think your right i will wait till mid August and see if it's still packin on the weight if im not satisfied then i'll snip off the smaller one in the rear of the patch.I will also hold off cutting a couple of vines off to slow it.(723 seed)I never paid much attention to my 814 till it hit 400lb or so then i started measuring,i know i know pretty unbelivable i dident think i'd get one that big, then i got serious about the whole deal LOL.The blossem end of the pumpkin is begining(the whole rear end)to resemble a red delicious apple, squareing up on me. I can't wait for ten days from now to see what it looks like,it's kinda cool looking.Well thanks again best of luck to all. John G...

John,
I have a pumpkin on my 723 plant that is growing at about the same rate as yours and I still have 4 fruit on the plant, but not for long. What you describe is quite close to the pace of my 1096.8 last year. I would not remove any vines (unless they are in the way) in an attempt to slow things down and if the other fruit is growing at a fast pace too, I would probably leave it on for now. Two 1000 pounders on one plant?
